Museum Day with Cousins

At the California Academy of Sciences and then the DeYoung Museum with cousins. Abuela and Grandpa, too (but they aren't in these photos).  Busy, interesting day. I especially loved the Dutch exhibit and the photo below!

Survey Says...

They want to start a band and decided to create surveys for potential band members.  G's idea, K's execution... and the friends went along with it.  Name.  Instrument.   And my favorite:  "Do you like trying new things?"  Cool.

Country Day: Caribbean Islands

G did her presentation on the animals of Cuba. No enough time to prep, but she has awesome presence and carried it off. K did hers on folk songs in the African diaspora, learning a new word along the way. Hers was chosen based on a paragraph read and was surprisingly difficult to research and cull down into a short presentation. She loves music and - as she told one kid with a question - loves making up songs, so she liked the topic.

Such a dismal history in the region. I found the topics surprisingly dreary; perhaps I had read too many stories of the diaspora.  G dancing (the braids she'd requested flying!) to K's presentation made me smile, though.

Country Day - Caribbean Islands - Prep #2

Making masks for the Jamaican festival of Jonnkannu.
I was impressed with how well they turned out!

SF History: Cable Cars and More in the Gilded Age

The period prior to the 1906 earthquake was full of innovation and change. We talked about the creation of Golden Gate park last time and this time focused on the cable cars, starting with a video filmed on a train progressing toward the ferry building down Market Street just four days before the City was (mostly) destroyed. We asked the kids to make a list of the things that they saw in the video that were different from what we'd see today and they picked up on much that we moms hadn't even thought of. We also looked at the history of the cable cars and constructed a paper model. Next stop - a trip to the cable car museum and (of course!) a ride. Can't wait!

Country Day: Caribbean Islands - Prep #1

Now THIS was fun... we mapped the major Caribbean islands with cupcakes decorated like islands. The final pictures are of Charles' science class. Love his look of enthusiasm as they worked to power a toy car with salt water.

Wild Day: Bison and Signs of Spring

It is always great to find animals during our adventures and certainly the bobcat and dolphins were highlights. But these... bison? We happily combined our Wild Day with our SF History (Golden Gate Park) curriculum here and got pretty close to these very cool, if improbable San Francisco landmarks.

Makers! Conspiring on a Project

Love this enthusiastic interest in learning how things work. AND working with Daddy, of course!
