Science: Geology Class Update

Week One:
Mineral Match: practice identifying minerals, learning how minerals play a role in everyday life by connecting minerals to everyday objects. Includes using the Mohr hardness scale
Mining: Learning about some of the environmental consequences associated with mineral extraction, learn that minerals are nonrenewable resources.
Week Two:
Rock cycle role play, leaning about rock cycles and the differences between sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous rock; learning about the effects of weathering, erosion, heat, and pressure.
Learn about California geology and where in the Bay Area to find each of these types of rock. Learn about common uses for rocks.
Week Three:
Classify sand based on its size, roundness, color, and composition. Determine where sand comes from based on its characteristics.
Earthquake preparedness: major components of an safety kit, discussions of why and how they might be necessary and helpful in the case of an earthquake.
 
Went well... and G, who is crazy about rocks, was in her element.  Her walls are now papered with geology posters.
