Visiting Fort Ross

I've always wanted to visit, but my last trip I remember only from pictures - I was about 18 months old. The girls were totally enthusiastic and interested, not just in the fort, but in the history, the diet of those who lived there, and more. It was occupied by Russians and Alaskans from 1812 to 1841 and the defense was to keep the Spanish out. I had assumed that "Ross" was a person, but we learned that its etymology was "Russian;" as in, 'the Russian fort." Someplace we will definitely visit again!

Below, one dancing girl near the entrance. A foggy day to visit - just right for the mood I imagine on the CA coast.

Chapel (above) and detail of chapel bell (right)

35 foot well dug by the Russians

Sea lions on the beach - on our return.
