We had a challenge this year; to find a costume that would incorporate Charles' wheelchair, since the girls are old enough to be pretty quick in going from house to house and were afraid that he couldn't keep up if he was on his crutches or using his cane.  We made a trip to the Dollar Store and, voila! $10 later had a great costume, one that nearly caused some accidents as people drove by craning their necks and then laughing in appreciation at Charles' head on a platter....

Head on a platter.

The girls were Greek muses Calliope and Erato, bringing the head on a platter to Zeus.

Charles' expressions helped the costume

Home Therapy

Methinks that the therapists at the acute rehab didn't laugh this much.  Hee, hee.  Therapy at home includes both fine motor skills for his left hand and brain games to keep his brain healing.  No reason everyone can't join in, making it a lot of fun and good family time.

Pumpkin Patch and Maze

Those hands in the background?  K and G, who can see me up on a ladder looking for them!

Halloween Party

We brought finger food and for once, being told, "this is too gross to eat" was a compliment:

Hee, hee!  These were a hit - to photograph if not to eat.  :-)

On the un-gross (and even healthy) side

Hard to transport, but cute.

"Used bandaids," also totally disgusting

Erato (one of the nine muses in Greek mythology) with the shrunken apple head witch she created.  (Her sister, who escaped the photographer this time, was Calliope, one of the other nine muses.  One is lyrical poetry (Shakespeare) and one is epic poetry (Homer).  I *think* that G is the former and K is the latter, but they know more about it than I do....)

Awesome party; thanks, R&Bs!

25th Annual Putman County Spelling Bee

Oh, we had fun at this!  A small theater, so the audience was almost one with the performers.... in fact, they drew about four members of the audience to be part of the "bee" and it was fun to watch them ad lib lines and even dance steps.  (Better them than me!)  Slightly inappropriate but really funny; all four of us had a great time.

Overheard: Demeter

K:  "Mom, if G and I were one person, and we died, would you stop everything on earth from growing just because we were dead?"

Me: (Startled and thinking fast, 'cause this came out of the blue)  "Ummm.... are you talking about Demeter?"

K: "Yes.  I just don't get why she wouldn't let anything at all grow just because her daughter was dead."

Me:  "Well...  I think if it was me, it wouldn't be out of anger or revenge, but just pure grief that would paralyze me from doing anything else."

K:  (Who had been perplexed, but now seems to get it) "Oh, Mom.  You are totally Demeter."

And that's what we get for studying the Greek Gods again...

Morning Therapy in the Park

Now this is MUCH better than the hospital.... G appointed herself the morning Physical Therapist and together we did all of the exercises (plus a few) that the PT who arrives later in the day assigned.  Since G supplements her direction with occasional kisses for Daddy, she's by far his favorite.

Spectacular Flower Close Up

Charles' morning Physical Therapist (aka dear daughter #2) told me to take pictures of this spectacular flower as we returned from our walk to the park. She's got good taste!

Pumpkin Patch

A fun day with faculty friends and others whom we were delighted to have join us.  It was great to catch up; great to watch the kids run endlessly having so much fun in the hay maze, on a tractor ride, and in a massive "sand box" full instead of corn kernels; and great to be outside with Charles, who navigated the uneven ground just fine with his crutches.  It was bright and windy (we were relatively close to the ocean) and startlingly dry throughout Marin and southern Sonoma counties.  Gorgeous, still!  Praying for rain....

These four had fun being trouble....

Indoor Mini Golf

A fun, last-minute tenth birthday party get-together celebration at an indoor mini-golf place in a building that used to be a funeral home!  Really cool architecture, the holes were each really creative in their design, and I loved the SF theme (starting with Lotta's Fountain and the golden fire hydrant the girls helped re-paint a few years ago when we got up at 3:30 AM for the SF Earthquake commemoration events).  Happy Birthday, G!  Fun had by all, including Charles, who got to swing a golf club for the first time in too many months....

Making Apple Pear Juice

Picked a whole bunch of apples (and a few pears) at my parents' house and learned the consequences of organically grown (full of bugs).   Nonetheless, the fruit was great for juicing and G and I worked together to chop and juice enough for about two full Nalgene bottles.  Fun!

Cousin Sleepover

My mom is on a medical mission to the Phillippines, so we decided to have a sleepover at their house to keep my dad company.  Cousin time means jumping on the trampoline in pajamas and cuddling with Abuela and Grandpa's dog, among other fun things.... (Photos courtesy of my sister....)

Blue Angels

We watched the Blue Angels Fleet Week show from the large patio at Charles' hospital.  We are right in the middle of the City, so we got great views as they did their stuff.  Awesome!  Oh yeah... Ike and Puck came too.  Pet therapy is love therapy.  :-)

Saturday, October 10, 2015

It is the month of Halloween, so this post is appropriate.  G and I found it when we opened a door at my parents' house and it swung down near my head, shooting a spurt of web to aid its retreat.  Very cool... and massive, too.  Hard to tell without something in the photos for perspective, but it was probably the size of a dime.  At least!

Enchanted Aromas Launches

The kids have been experimenting with making perfume; however, being in the "start up" environment of the Silicon Valley, something has worn off... they aren't interested just in making it, but in selling their creation.  So far, the sales have been ambushes - asking a kind adult whom they already know.  However, with the other three creators spending the night, they asked to step up their sales a bit and went to a nearby park that was teeming with an evening family event.  Bam!  More sales, more fun....

(In a "this only happens in the Bay Area" moment, one of the kids who came by to see what they were selling asked for a sniff, then complimented their product.  But before buying, he asked, "is it organic?"  Hee, hee, ho, ho....  Yes, definitely, but... oh my....)

Yes, organic.  In fact, the kids learned that bougainvillaea don't have much scent, but they do look lovely when coupled with a scent...
