Some Favorite Yosemite Moments

Yosemite After the Storm

 I cried.

It was too cold to even open the car doors!  Too cold for the snow to melt, at least at first.  After a while, we started to hear multiple mini-avalanches falling on the rocks below.  Before the sun came up it was spectacular, then after, the beauty changed and was breathtaking in new ways.  We'd take a few steps (and later drive a few seconds), then see a new view and gasp again.  It was hard to leave (though not from a driving perspective - I got our new chains on without a problem and that was a relief!)  

Yosemite as a Winter Wonderland

 We are coastal Californians; falling snow is always going to be super exciting and cool.  But in Yosemite, it is super exciting and cool AND spectacular.  We walked West.  We walked East.  We saw rivers and bridges and falls and other spectacular sites made almost unrecognizable by the snow and so newly fantastic.  The girls even sledded, though we kept that intentionally short since none of us had solidly waterproof clothes.  Wonderful day.

Yosemite in Winter Day 1

 Last minute trip, probably due to cancellations because other people saw the extreme weather and "do not travel" warnings.  We got rerouted (an hour and a half detour) because of rock slides, but the longer trip was also spectacular.  I worried about driving, flooding, rock slides, and snow but at the end of the day it wasn't as bad as many other winter driving trips to the snow.  (It isn't helpful when you check the weather service and read "flood warning" in such a broad area that it feels more like a CYA than actually helpful information.)  I kept my eyes on the live cams to get a sense for actual flooding and we didn't have trouble.
